From 1966 to 1976, the so-called Cultural Revolution in China throws an entire nation into violent and catastrophic turmoil. Millions are displaced, tortured, or executed under Mao Zedong’s ruthless regime. Suffering persecution for his religious beliefs and family connections abroad, a young doctor named Qing Zeng is forced to flee. He makes two failed attempts at escape to Hong Kong. Finally, at the peak of the Cultural Revolution, and at the risk of losing his life, he eventually makes a heart-pounding escape alone to North Vietnam and manages to survive in the rural countryside for seven long years.
